is an answering machine on at all hours.

We ask our students and guests to observe common dojo courtesy, as you would in any other dojo, such as:
- Students are invited to bring guests to watch or
participate; but should introduce guests to the Yudansha (one of the
black belts).
- All visiting Aikidoka are welcome to train at Melbourne Aikikai regardless of affiliation.
- Students
who train at other schools should offer to pay a mat fee before
training. If you take time and knowledge from another instructor, you
should, at least, offer to help his school.
- Students should conform to the rules of etiquette of their host dojo (whether at MAK or other Dojo).
- Some common points of Dojo etiquette at MAK are:
- Refer to the class’s instructor as Sensei. All other black belts by their name and ‘Sensei’
- Visiting Mudansha (non-black belt in Aikido) wear a white belt regardless of rank; signifying an open mind.
- In Aikido: only Yudansha will wear a black belt and hakama.
- In Aikido: women of fifth kyu and above will wear hakama with their appropriate rank belt.
- In Iaido: all students will wear a hakama and appropriate rank belt.
- Attempt
to learn what Sensei is teaching, without trying to shape techniques to
personal pre-conceptions. Assume that Sensei knows something you don’t; and
reach to grasp it. Approaching a class with the attitude that you know better
than Sensei wastes your time, Sensei’s, and your workout partner’s as you miss the point Sensei is trying to lead you to.
- Sand Drift Aikidoka, who are not to Melbourne Aikikai members, are invited
to train at Melbourne Aikikai twice per month at no cost.
- We have limited mat time, if you have a problem that isn't an emergency; Please Do not disturb the class in progress.
- Ours is a small dojo and conversations carry. Please be quiet while a class is in progress. Especially during lecture, or while sensei is bowing in and bowing off the mats.
- We (the students of MAK) care for our dojo, please let one of the Yudansha if something needs attention.
- The final word on any point of Dojo etiquette comes from that Dojo's
Sensei. When in doubt, ask one of the Black Belts, as they should know
what Sensei would expect.
